Chinese manufacturer of smartphones Oppo on Tuesday revealed the first self-developed chip as the company expands deeper into the semiconductor market. The chip, which is dubbed MariSilicon X, is a neural processing unit (NPU) that enhances photos and videos captured by smartphones. It will be made using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation’s (TSMC) six nanometre processing technology. It will be integrated into the company’s soon-to-launch Find X series of smartphones that are scheduled to go on the market by 2022.

Apart from MariSilicon X, Oppo has also created an energy management chip it utilizes for certain chargers. On September 1, Vivo revealed that they had created an imaging signal processor (ISP) that it plans to use for its smartphones. The efforts to develop the chip are in line with the government’s push for Chinese companies to help boost the chip industry in China that has for a long time fallen behind that of other countries like the United States and other East Asian economies.

The necessity for an independent chip industry was brought to light this year as US sanctions on the Shenzhen-based Huawei Technologies Co Ltd prevented Huawei Technologies Co Ltd from procuring key components.

The restrictions hampered the company’s smartphone division , as also its in-house processor department HiSilicon which was once the sole Chinese unit working on smartphone processors that are able to compete with the ones of Qualcomm. Companies and governments around all over the world are trying to increase production of semiconductors following a worldwide shortage hit manufacturing following COVID-19’s crisis.
